How to “Study Harder”
Where to Study
We have heard of students who have an entire “library
room” at home for their use and we have known students who had to
study in the bath tub as the risk of being shot in a drive by was less
if they stayed in the tub. Chances are that most of you will be in a situation
somewhere in between these two extremes.
In an ideal world you will have:
- A desk of your own with room to work and keep supplies. (Yes, some
people do work better sprawled out on the bed or floor but most of us
will do best at a desk, especially, for writing.)
- An adjustable chair for comfort, support and posture.
- Good lighting, both overhead and task lights.
- Paper, pens, pencils, calculator and if possible a computer all located
within arm’s length.
- A thesaurus and dictionary.
- A clock to help you manage your time.
- A distraction free location as in no TV, music or Play Station. (OK
before you say it, YES, some people do study better with background
sound like music and some even with TV, however, be HONEST with yourself,
if you just like having it on, that is NOT the same thing!)
If home offers few of these opportunities you may need to look at the
local library, community college, boys’ or girls’ club or
any other community-based after school educational program as a necessary
home-away-from-home study center.
